It was close to one-thirty in the afternoon when Nikki finally arrived at her apartment building on Rue St. Sébastien. She was encouraged to have found a church family fairly quickly, and figured sheâd had some divine help. Talking to Philippe she hadnât seen the time pass. Maybe sheâd see him again once he moved to Paris. It would be nice to meet the other members of the fellowship as well. Sheâd plan to attend the weekly Bible study next Thursday.
After a light lunch alone in her sunlit apartment, Nikki turned on her computer, which she hadnât checked in several days. Her heart jumped when she saw Mikeâs name pop up. Maybe his deadline was finished now and heâd had time to write some news. She looked forward to telling him all about her new church and the people sheâd met there.
Trying to discipline herself, she read her parentsâ email, then one from Elaine. Sheâd met a new guy, Eric, from church and was interested in him. Before leaving in June, Nikki had given her email address to Torrie the Terror, and had received a note from her that she had registered for French Three for the coming school year.
She saved Mikeâs email for last, but with disappointment saw that it was brief. âIâm a bit swamped now, but will write when I can. Hope youâre having a good summer. Love, Mikeâ.
A good summer? She frowned. Did that mean he wasnât planning to write to her again? Was his cryptic phrase equivalent to âhave a nice lifeâ? The tone was nothing like his previous warmth, especially his last email and his birthday note. It didnât even sound like Mike. Maybe one of his roommates or colleagues had written in his place, as a practical joke.
Nikki shook her head. That would be stretching it. More likely, he realized he was starting to sound like he actually liked her, and got terrified of having sent the wrong message. He was backpedaling, just so she understood, just so she wouldnât jump to conclusions about his intentions. Just friends. Nothing more.
She swallowed hard, her eyes stinging. Sheâd heard his message loud and clear.
